WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court is trying to sort out whether drug companies can be sued for claims of serious side effects from childhood vaccines without driving vaccine makers from the market and risking a public health crisis. The court heard arguments Tuesday in an appeal filed by Pittsburgh-area parents who want to sue drug maker Wyeth, which is owned by Pfizer Inc., for the health problems they say their 18-year-old daughter suffered from a vaccine she received in infancy. Several justices appeared sympathetic to the parents’ plea to be allowed to make their case in court. Wyeth, backed by the Obama administration and many public health groups, argued that Congress shielded drug companies from most vaccine lawsuits when it created a special vaccine court 24 years ago to handle the claims. THURSDAY, Oct. 7 (HealthDay News) — Taking blood-pressure pills at night, rather than in the morning, may better control hypertension and significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, new research suggests. The results of the five-year study add to the growing evidence that tailoring the timing and dosage of medications to the body's biological rhythms may help drugs work better and with fewer side effects, the researchers said. The research also highlighted the importance of sleep-time blood pressure, the most sensitive predictor of a person's risk of death from cardiovascular disease over a five-year period. In healthy people, blood pressure dips at night, by 10 percent to 20 percent. “Nondippers,” whose blood pressure doesn't fall as it should at night, are more vulnerable to cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke, the researchers said. “This study confirms sleep-time blood pressure as the most relevant predictor of cardiovascular risk,” said lead … Read ahead
